Port of rønne

FUTURE-PROOFING BORNHOLM'S LARGEST PORT

Port of Rønne is the island of Bornholm’s largest commercial port and essential for Bornholm’s growth and development. In future years, Port of Rønne expects to increase its activities e.g. in  connection with shipping of offshore wind turbines and an increasing number of cruise ships.

As a result, Port of Rønne developed a master plan comprising an ongoing expansion of the port towards the year 2050. The first phase was completed in October 2019.

VG Entreprenør A/S delivered the first phase of the port expansion in a joint venture with Per Aarsleff A/S. The design and build contract included 600 metres of new quay structures, a dredged 11-metre-deep harbour basin, 1.1 kilometres of new outer breakwaters and 15 hectares of new hinterland.

Special circumstances
As Port of Rønne is very exposed to harsh weather conditions, it was necessary to built in cover stones weighing up to 19 tons on the breakwater.

Almost half of the 610,000 tons of stones used for the new breakwater came from local quarries located on Bornholm. The remaining stones were sailed to Bornholm from Norway and Sweden.
